Dan Bissonette, Owner

What started out as a summer job at Lakewood Shores Golf and Country Club in Oscoda, Mi to obtain a tan became a labor of love for the game of golf and a passion for turfgrass agronomy blossomed.

After attending Michigan State University Turfgrass Agronomy Program with the late Dr. Kenyon T. Payne (a summer resident of Charlevoix), he was offered an internship (and subsequent assistant position upon graduation from MSU) at Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club in Harbor Springs. He then went on to be the head golf course superintendent at Walloon Lake Country Club for 20 years.

He was a member of the Turf Club and his studies earned a place on the Dean’s List at MSU. Dan’s continuing education is forever ongoing including, attending the Great Lakes Trade Expo, the Golf Industry Show and local educational events held throughout the year. He is a Master Gardener and featured speaker at MG events annually. His “Class A” status was dictated by educational and community involvement certification requirements by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Prior to the experience in the golf course industry, he gained an interest in agriculture while spending 10 years working within his families fresh produce and custom butcher business his parents owned near the Wurtsmith Air Force SAC Base in Oscoda.

In addition to his employment and education experience, Dan was asked by his peers to serve on various boards representing the industry on political and environmental issues. He is a Past President of the Michigan Golf Course Superintendents Association (MiGCSA).  He was on the steering committee to help form this new association merger of four regional superintendent groups for six years. His previous tenure as President of the Northern Michigan Turf Managers Association no doubt lead to his appointment at a state level. While serving six years on the NMTMA Board, Dan was chair of various committees including Communications, Bylaws, Membership, Finance, Education and Events.

Philanthropic involvement arrived when Dan was elected to the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation Board. The mission of the 501 (c) (3) corporation is to oversee the $1.5 million in assets utilized for education and research at Michigan State University in the field of agronomy. His committee responsibility on the Foundation Board is Co-chair of Grant Research. In addition, Dan has moderated many turfgrass events throughout his career.
